Wheels of Helios

I was terrified of missing the bloom of my sunflowers when I left for vacation because I had already seen the heads begin to form. When I returned, I found the plants had grown to their full height and were not yet in bloom. They have a fragrance that I can only describe as something straight out of a childhood memory. It reminds me a bit of Chamomile.

This bloom has been spent but it's not done yet. It's the first bloom to lose it's petals and I'm delighted that it was pollinated when I wasn't looking. Those white pods inside the flower are developing seeds. Because of how quick it was to bloom, this is seed that I'll be saving for next year. I want to breed a better sunflower so I'll also be saving seed from the plants least affected by disease, those that are stronger, those that have curious traits, and of course, those with the tastiest seeds!
